Director of Pitkin County Human Services Nan Sundeen, has won the 2107 Public Service Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado Nonprofit Association. This award goes to a government employee who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to strengthen the nonprofit sector, through promoting ethics and accountability in the sector and through remaining actively engaged in the programs and operations of nonprofit organizations throughout his or her career.

“Nan sees the future like few others and has the grace to help others get there,” said Ross Brooks, CEO of Mountain Family Health Centers.  “Indeed, her extraordinary vision and leadership have fueled dozens of successful and sustainable collaborations which reflect the power of small, rural counties working together with nonprofits to build community health, safety and well-being," Brooks said.

This coming March 6th through 10th, 2017 is designated as Colorado Nonprofits Week, where the work of nonprofits in the state is highlighted and celebrated in communities statewide. As part of their recognition of this work, the Colorado Nonprofit Association honors outstanding leaders who have contributed richly to the sector with targeted awards and a luncheon ceremony on March 6th in Denver.

Sundeen has just celebrated 25 years as Health and Human Services Director in Pitkin County. In her role she has pursued her vision of equitable access to health care for all to include factors like transportation, employment, education and social support networks. Sundeen is responsible for Pitkin County’s dedicated property tax since 2002, which generates almost $2 million/year to Roaring Fork Valley health and human services non-profit partners.  She has personally led multiple significant change efforts in Aspen, Pitkin County and throughout the West Mountain and Rural Resort regions that have changed the lives of non-profits and the clients they serve.
