Be on alert for an email scam.

Citizen received email from fake address seeking banking information

PITKIN COUNTY, COLO. (July 7, 2023) - Pitkin County was contacted by a citizen this morning who received a scam email seeking the recipient’s bank information. The email came from a fake email address, treasurer@pitklncounty.com (note the lowercase “L” in Pitkin), and requested the recipient send money to an unauthorized routing number and account number. Thankfully, the recipient realized the email was a fake and contacted the county with the scammer’s information.

Please see the attached image for an idea of what the email looked like.

Please be aware of any information that looks suspicious. Check the email account closely and look for clues in emails that may indicate that it’s a scam. In this case, the email had a number of red flags including a fake email address, incorrect physical address, and inaccurate website.

The county’s IT Department is working with its technology solution provider, as well as contacts at CISA and the FBI about the incident.
