Similar project also slated for Sky Mountain Park
PITKIN COUNTY, COLO. – Sixty acres of brush at Filoha Meadows Nature Preserve and in the adjacent White River National Forest will be thinned to improve wildlife habitat and reduce wildfire fuels in a joint effort that will begin next week.
The work may be visible from Hwy. 133 and Penny Hot Springs, north of Redstone.
The project is jointly funded by Pitkin County Open Space and Trails, the White River National Forest, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District. Western Vegetation Management LLC has been contracted to perform the work. It is anticipated that about 42 acres will be thinned, or masticated, by machine and about 18 acres in steeper, rocky terrain will be cut by hand in September. Open Space and Trails will oversee the work with inspection assistance from the U.S. Forest Service.
Brush will be thinned to 40 to 60 percent of the project area, leaving islands of vegetation intact for habitat. Materials that are cut by hand will then be lopped and scattered and/or chipped to create finer fuels, reducing wildfire risk. Overall, the project will improve habitat for wintering wildlife, primarily elk, bighorn sheep and mule deer. Cutting back oak brush helps spur new growth of tender, young plants, benefitting the big-game animals that forage here. In addition, thinning of pinyon and juniper trees near rocky slopes will maintain open areas that aid bighorn sheep in spotting and escaping predators.
Following this project, Open Space and Trails will oversee a similar vegetation thinning project at Sky Mountain Park this fall.
