Groundbreaking energy project powered by regional collaboration and state funding

PITKIN COUNTY, CO (July 23, 2025) — Pitkin County is proud to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Aspen Airport Business Center Integrated Clean Energy Microgrid , a groundbreaking project made possible through strong local partnerships and critical funding support. This innovative microgrid system marks a significant milestone in the county’s commitment to sustainability, community safety, and climate action.

A key feature of the project is the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which will allow essential county services to continue operating during power outages in the area. By supporting critical infrastructure like the airport and public works operations, this battery backup increases the county’s resilience during crises such as wildfires, extreme weather, and grid disruptions—ensuring continued service to the community when it's needed most.

“This project would not have been possible without the funding and support from our partners,” said Pitkin County Manager, Jon Peacock. “From state agencies to our local utilities and transportation partners, this collaboration is helping us move from ambitious goals to action.”

Special thanks go to the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA), Holy Cross Energy, and RMI (formerly Rocky Mountain Institute), as well as to technology provider WEG and CLP Engineering, whose expertise and collaboration were instrumental in bringing this energy network to life.

This project was made possible through public contributions totaling more than $5.6 million. The Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) contributed $2,386,210 while project partners Holy Cross Energy invested $500,000 toward the energy infrastructure and the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority supported the effort with $213,750. Pitkin County invested a total of $2,066,870 from its General Fund and the Renewable Energy Mitigation Program (REMP).

El Condado de Pitkin celebra la inauguración del Sistema Micro Red de Energía Limpia Integrada en el Centro de Negocios de Aspen

Un proyecto energético innovador impulsado por la colaboración regional y financiamiento estatal

CONDADO DE PITKIN, CO (23 de julio, 2025) — El Condado de Pitkin se enorgullece de celebrar la inauguración de Micro Red de Energía Limpia Integrada en el Centro de Negocios del Aeropuerto de Aspen (Aspen Airport Business Center, AABC), un proyecto revolucionario posible gracias a sólidas asociaciones locales y un apoyo financiero crítico. Este innovador sistema de micro red marca una meta significativa en el compromiso del condado con la sostenibilidad, la seguridad y la acción climática.

Una característica clave del proyecto es el Sistema de Almacenamiento de Energía en Batería (BESS, por sus siglas en inglés), que permitirá que los servicios esenciales del condado continúen operando durante cortes de energía en el área. Al respaldar infraestructuras críticas como el aeropuerto y las operaciones de obras públicas, esta batería de respaldo aumenta la resiliencia del condado durante crisis como incendios forestales, condiciones climáticas extremas e interrupciones de la red, asegurando la continuidad del servicio a la comunidad cuando más se necesita.

“Este proyecto no habría sido posible sin el financiamiento y el apoyo de nuestros socios”, dijo el Gerente del Condado de Pitkin, Jon Peacock. “Desde agencias estatales hasta nuestras utilidades locales y socios de transporte, esta colaboración nos está ayudando a pasar de objetivos ambiciosos a la acción”.

Este proyecto fue posible gracias a contribuciones públicas que suman más de $5.6 millones. El Departamento de Asuntos Locales de Colorado (DOLA) contribuyó con $2,386,210, mientras que los socios del proyecto Holy Cross Energy invirtieron $500,000 en la infraestructura energética y la Autoridad de Transporte de Roaring Fork apoyó el esfuerzo con $213,750. El Condado de Pitkin invirtió un total de $2,066,870 de su Fondo General y del Programa de Mitigación de Energía Renovable (REMP).
