The Western Slope Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Feasibility Project was carried out by Pitkin County, Mesa County, Eagle County and Delta County in partnership with regional airports and economic development entities across the region with support from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) in 2024-2025. The partners sought to understand whether a SAF production pathway could be viable in the region, given growing interest in decarbonizing aviation and supporting long-term economic development across the Western Slope. The project concluded at the end of 2025.
Although no immediate pathway to commercial SAF production exists under current conditions on the Western Slope, the analysis highlights several areas that may merit future attention if the partners choose to revisit SAF-related opportunities. The report also provides a clear and unified foundation for regional decision-making. Together, these components offer an evidence-based understanding of the Western Slope’s SAF landscape and the conditions that would need to be in place before any future pathway evaluation could proceed.
