Rockfall mitigation work along Castle Creek Road is ongoing through October for the Castle Creek Corridor Improvement Project. Bicyclists are required to queue behind all vehicles through the traffic-controlled area. Rockfall work requires lane closures in the construction area and alternating one-way traffic. Having bikes follow behind motor vehicles facilitates safer passage through the construction site, which has a narrow existing roadway and challenging sightlines.
In the work zone, bicyclists will hold with motorists traveling in the same direction. When indicated by a flagger or by the timed traffic signal lights, all motor vehicle traffic is permitted to continue. Bicyclists must wait for all cars to pass then proceed through the construction zone. There is no pedestrian access through the area.

About the Castle Creek Trail project: The primary objective of the Castle Creek Trail project is to provide a safer route in the Castle Creek Road corridor that connects to the regional trail system in Aspen and Pitkin County for cyclists and pedestrians. The roadway has a lack of shoulder area, extremely steep roadside slopes and limited visibility. Travel along the road can be hazardous, particularly for pedestrians and less experienced cyclists. Major users of the corridor include residents, road cyclists, Marolt Ranch housing residents, Aspen Valley Hospital staff, and the students, staff, and visitors of the Aspen Music Festival and School / Aspen Country Day School campus. The trail design addresses enhanced trail and road user safety, accessibility, maintenance, feasibility and public input.
