The final project in a series of parking lot reconfiguration and improvement measures to increase parking capacity and convenience at the airport was completed this week with the paving and striping of the Cell Phone waiting lot. The Cell Phone lot added almost 40 parking spaces along the sides of the Airport Road slip lane that leads onto westbound Highway 82 to the south of the terminal. The Cell Phone lot is designed to give drivers who are picking up travelers a place to wait inside their vehicles until they receive a call from an arriving passenger for pick up in front of the terminal. TSA security regulations eliminated parking directly in front of the terminal.

“Cell Phone Lots are being used at many airports around the country now to give people a place to wait for arriving passengers without leaving their vehicles,” said Airport Director of Construction, Matt Whitelock. “This saves the driver from having to pay to park in lots designed for traveling passengers. Flights get delayed and only the first 30 minutes are free. Now there is a more convenient option” Whitelock said.

The new Cell Phone Lot joins several other parking lot improvements that have been made at the airport over the past eight months. The restriping, relocating, and reconfiguring of outlying parking succeeded in adding over 100 additional parking spaces to the airport’s parking inventory.

“These additional spaces were much needed when we began experiencing a parking shortage during the summers of 2018 and 2019. While we continue to encourage travelers to find alternative means of transportation to the airport to eliminate the need to park here, these parking improvements will go a long way toward providing a better customer experience,” Whitelock said.
