[ARCHIVED] Road construction in Pitkin County: A midsummer update

Owl Creek Road work enters new phase, is nearing completion; Woody Creek Road work re-intensifies in preparation for completion this fall

PITKIN COUNTY, COLO. (July 13, 2023) - Two road projects underway in Pitkin County will significantly improve the integrity of Owl Creek Road and the paved section of Woody Creek Road. Both roads have experienced major drainage issues, among other problems. The work will extend the life of the roads and reduce maintenance in the future.

Owl Creek Road

Work completed

Since work started in March, Owl Creek Road has received extensive drainage improvements and subgrade work. Crews have completed the replacement of culverts and concrete speed tables that replaced asphalt speed humps. Workers have also installed new inlet structures and subsurface drainage systems in an extensive effort to improve the long term durability of Owl Creek Road.

In addition to drainage and speed table work, the roadway has been stabilized and slightly widened in winding areas where vehicles have left the roadway. Widening has also lengthened receiving lanes for traffic turning onto Owl Creek Road from Highway 82 in order to reduce merge conflicts.

What’s ahead

Work is now underway to complete milling and patching of the road repairs and widenings in preparation of the final asphalt overlay. Travelers will see heavy equipment and workers so please travel with caution. This heavy phase of construction on Owl Creek Road will last for a few more weeks and then shift to work that includes final touches such as striping and shouldering.

Woody Creek Road

For work on Woody Creek Road, crews are completing culvert replacement and drainage work. Failing sections of the road are being treated with roadway stabilization. This involves the excavation of several feet of subgrade material to be rebuilt with layers of road base and geotextile. This will help improve the long-term performance of the roadway and reduce future maintenance needs. Once the drainage and subgrade work is completed, Woody Creek Road will see spot patches followed by an asphalt overlay. The work will be completed this fall.
