PITKIN COUNTY, COLO. – The long-anticipated installation of a bike/pedestrian bridge connecting the Aspen Village neighborhood with the Rio Grande Trail will occur on Oct. 28-30.
The following road, trail and river closures will be in effect during the project, subject to change depending on weather conditions.
Road Closures:
- Single-lane closure of Lower River Road. Traffic will remain open in both directions in an alternating, one-way configuration. Expect flaggers on the morning of Oct. 29.
- Access from Lower/Upper River Road to Hwy. 82 via Gerbaz Way will be closed on Oct. 29 and likely on Oct. 30. Drivers will need to utilize another Hwy. 82 access point either up- or downvalley. The access from Hwy. 82 onto Gerbaz Way will remain open.
Trail Closures:
- Rio Grande Trail closed Oct. 29-30, with one-mile detour on Lower River Road.
- Aspen Village Trail underpass will be closed during operations on Oct. 28-30.
River Closure:
- River closed to anglers and boaters downstream of Gerbaz Way bridge on Oct. 29-30.
Mueller Construction Services is the contractor for the $1.57 million project. The prefabricated, steel-truss bridge, which has been assembled offsite by BCS Fabrication, will be trucked to the site and installed with the use of two cranes – one on each side of the river.
Pitkin County Open Space and Trails, which is funding the bridge, anticipates holding a ribbon-cutting to celebrate completion of the project in November, on a date yet to be determined.
To be called the Dolores Stutsman Bridge in honor of the woman who, until her passing, was a tireless advocate of the bridge, the span will cross the Roaring Fork River near Gerbaz Way. The new bridge will mean pedestrians and bicyclists no longer need to use narrow, winding and steep Gerbaz Way to travel between Aspen Village and the Rio Grande Trail.
“We’re so glad to complete this project, which the greater Gerbazdale/Aspen Village community has wanted for a very long time,” said Jessie Young, planning and outreach manager for Open Space and Trails. “For years, Dolores Stutsman would call up our staff periodically and ask when we were going to build the bridge. It’s fitting that it will be named in her honor.”
Stutsman, who died in 2020, was born on her family’s ranch in Gerbazdale and lived there most of her life. She was married to Dick Stutsman for 54 years and worked alongside him for 32 years at nearby Stutsman-Gerbaz Earthmoving, formed by Dick and Dolores’ brother, Jerry Gerbaz.

Fechas para instalar el nuevo puente peatonal/bicicletas establecidas
La tan esperada instalación de un puente peatonal y para ciclistas que conectará el vecindario de Aspen Village con el sendero Río Grande se llevará a cabo el 29 y 30 de octubre.
Durante el proyecto, se implementarán los siguientes cierres de carreteras, senderos y ríos:
Cierre de carreteras:
- Cierre de un solo carril en la carretera Lower River Road. El tráfico permanecerá abierto en ambas direcciones en una configuración alternante de un solo sentido. Se esperan banderilleros en la mañana del 29 de octubre.
- El acceso de la carretera Lower/Upper River hacía el HWY 82 a través de Gerbaz Way estará cerrado el 29 de octubre y probablemente el 30 de octubre. Servicios de Construcción Mueller es el contratista del proyecto de 1.57 millones de dólares. El puente con estructura de acero, que ha sido ensamblado fuera del lugar por Fabricantes BCS, será transportado al lugar e instalado fuera por dos grúas, una a cada lado del río.
Espacios Abiertos y Senderos del Condado, que financia el proyecto, anticipa realizar una inauguración para celebrar la finalización del proyecto en noviembre, con una fecha aún por determinar.
El puente será nombrado Puente Dolores Stustman en honor a la mujer fue, hasta su fallecimiento, defensora incansable del puente. La estructura cruzará el río Roaring Fork cerca de Gerbaz Way. El nuevo puente significa que los peatones y ciclistas ya no necesitarán utilizar el estrecho, sinuoso y empinado camino Gerbaz Way para viajar entre Aspen Village y el sendero Rio Grande.
