Scammers are using fraudulent phone calls, emails, and text messages to impersonate county officials and deceive recipients into making payments or providing sensitive information.
Recent Scam Tactics:
- Short-Term Rental (STR) License Holders – Scammers are contacting license holders, falsely claiming that their STR license is at risk of revocation unless immediate payment is made.
- Impersonation of County Manager Jon Peacock – County staff have reported receiving emails from bad actors pretending to be Jon Peacock, requesting urgent action.
- Wire Funds Requests – Fraudulent messages claim that Pitkin County’s Treasurer software is down, pressuring recipients to transfer funds.
What You Need to Know:
Pitkin County will never demand immediate payment over the phone, email, or text. If you receive a suspicious request, do not respond or provide personal information.
How to Protect Yourself:
Ignore and delete suspicious messages.
Report fraudulent emails as junk.
