Construction of Pitkin County’s new Administration and Sheriff’s facility gets underway next week. The project, which includes construction of 22,000 sq/ft and renovation of 16,000 square feet will be located behind Veteran’s Park and off the rear eastern corner of the Pitkin County Courthouse. The two-year-long construction project will require the temporary closure of Veteran’s Park, which itself will undergo a makeover as part of the project.
“We received wonderful feedback from local veterans and the public about what they hoped to see in the park’s makeover and we’re happy to be moving forward with a building project that complements and improves the park,” said Pitkin County Manager, Jon Peacock.
When excavation gets underway next week Veteran’s Park will be closed and fenced off to the public. A protective cover will will be placed over the existing monument to protect it from damage during construction.
“It’s essentially a framed ‘box’ that will cover the monument,” Peacock said. “We understand how sacred the monument and surrounding concrete is and we’re doing everything we can to protect it.”
