There’s good news from Pitkin County GIS for anyone who needs highly detailed topographic information about Pitkin County - Two foot contour data of nearly 300 square miles of Pitkin County is now available for free download by the public on the Pitkin County GIS website. Up to now the detail of only 10 foot contour data was available.
The new two foot contour mapping information was recently collected by the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) and shared with GIS for a nominal fee.
According to GIS Application Development Manager, Mary Lackner this is a real “coup” for Pitkin County because collecting this type of mapping detail is an expensive and time-consuming undertaking.
“GIS can now provide this very detailed topographical “property-level” data to the public at no charge,” Lackner said. "When you compare the contours of our standard 10 foot contour maps to 2 foot contours you can see just how much more valuable information you can glean from the map data," Lackner said.
Detailed contour data is used to illustrate the steepness and gentleness of slope and features on the landscape and to identify specific elevation information. Slope analysis, watershed modeling, terrain profiles and 3D visualization are some of the professional uses of this newly acquired information..
The maps are available in GIS and CAD format. GIS also offers classified LiDAR in .las file format.
