[ARCHIVED] Updated Castle Creek corridor trail design to be presented Aug. 2

ASPEN - The modified trail design for the Castle Creek Corridor project will be presented to the Pitkin County Open Space and Trails and City of Aspen Parks and Open Space boards on Thursday, Aug. 2 at the Aspen Firehouse at 12 p.m. This meeting is open to the public. Public comments will be taken during the meeting.

“The input and involvement during the public comment period on the three conceptual designs presented was insightful. From the public comments and direction from the open space boards, the designers were able to move toward an approach that aligns with project goals to minimize impacts while significantly improving the safety of pedestrians and cyclists,” said Gary Tennenbaum, Pitkin County Open Space and Trails director.

The proposed trail is now at 30% in the design process. This design includes a 6-foot trail on the east side of the road that is separated from traffic. Increased safety signage, speed tables and a widened shoulder on portions of the road are also included. These changes seek to limit the disturbance to vegetation and reduce costs while improving safety for users of the Castle Creek corridor. Lower speed limits in the corridor will also be considered.

Pitkin County Open Space and Trails and City of Aspen Parks and Open Space will be reviewing design work to date, including a more detailed cost estimate for construction of the trail. The project team is finalizing the design package and the meeting packet to be uploaded to the project webpage on or before August 1.
