Pitkin County Commissioners and other elected officials will cut the ribbon on their new downtown facility at a celebration planned for Tuesday, August 7th from 10 a.m. to noon. The facility, located at 530 East Main Street in Aspen, opened for business on Thursday, July 19th after a two-year-long construction and remodel project.
It’s the first time since the Pitkin County Courthouse was constructed in 1889 that a building, aside from the library, has been constructed in downtown Aspen to house Pitkin County’s government offices. The old county office building, formerly known as the Courthouse Plaza, still stands but has been completely remodeled on the interior. The new facility is attached to the old one and houses the Sheriff’s office, the Clerk and Recorder, and Motor Vehicle Department, along with most other county offices. The only offices not in the new facility include Human Services, Senior Services, Public Works, the Airport and the Solid Waste Center/Landfill.
“We hope the community will join us in this celebration since they were so involved in its concept and design,” said County Manager, Jon Peacock. “We think they’ll find the public spaces, including the County Commissioners’ meeting room, a refreshing change from our previous facility, It's definitely more welcoming and something the community can be proud of for many years to come,” Peacock said.
The public is invited to attend the event and partake in refreshments, enjoy live entertainment, hear about the project from dignitaries and others who were involved with the undertaking, and take guided tours of the new facility.
“One of the activities planned at the ribbon-cutting event is an opportunity for the public to write notes to the community 100 years from now to be put in a time capsule that will be unearthed in the year 2118,” Peacock said.
