Business and residential property owners will have an additional month to file their Personal Property Declarations with the Assessor’s office as a result of the COVID-19 shutdown in Colorado. Normally, these declarations must be made by April 15th. The deadline has been extended to June 15th for all business and residential personal property. The Governor’s office signed an Executive Order declaring the extension on April 2, 2020 for all business and residential personal property.

“Assessors offices around the state worked closely with the Colorado Division of Property Taxation to lobby for the extension after Governor Polis announced the statewide shutdown,” said Pitkin County Assessor, Deb Bamesberger.

In addition to real property valuations, Assessors are required by Colorado State Statutes to value all business personal property for taxation purposes. Personal property includes machinery, equipment, furniture, leasehold improvements, security devices, computers, signs, etc., which are used for the production of income or in the operation of a business. It does not include components of fixture systems that are required for the proper operation of the improvements (building). All business personal property is taxable in Colorado unless specifically exempted by the Colorado Constitution.

“An example of someone who would have to file a residential Personal Property Declaration is someone who operates a business from their home, like an AirBNB, or who any other type of home-based business,” said Pitkin County Assessor, Deb Bamesberger.

Residents who are able to complete their Personal Property Declarations but need assistance may contact the Pitkin County Assessor’s office at 970-920-5160 or by email.
