To ensure that climate action, equity, resiliency and quality of life are achieved as ultimate objectives, Pitkin County Commissioners will be launching a public outreach effort in late June as part of an effort to update current land use tools for managing growth in unincorporated Pitkin County.

The existing Pitkin County Growth Management Quota System (GMQS) was adopted in 1978 as a result of what was considered to be unbridled growth at an annual rate of 12%, that threatened rural and community character and the capacity of roads and utilities to accommodate projected development. While the existing Growth Management Quota System was lauded in 1978 as cutting edge and continues to achieve many of its original objectives, County Commissioners are reaching out to citizens to help determine what changes may be warranted to address community needs and issues that are relevant today, and moving forward.

"We hope that this public initiative can help us breathe new life into our growth management system relevant to today’s growth issues including focusing urgent attention on the byproducts of growth that impact our climate," said Pitkin County Community Development Director, Cindy Houben.

Nine consecutive public outreach meetings will be scheduled weekly from 10-noon on Thursdays, beginning on June 25, 2020, and running through September. Meetings will be held virtually until such time as physically meeting in larger groups is a safe and viable option. Participants will be asked to commit to participate in all of the meetings to provide continuity in the discussion. Citizens of all stripes, young and old, from various trades and backgrounds are encouraged to join in this endeavor!
