[ARCHIVED] Trail closures set for tree work

Bridge site near Gerbaz Way

PITKIN COUNTY, COLO. – A segment of the Rio Grande Trail and the Aspen Village Trail near Gerbaz Way will be closed this week for tree removal. Rio Grande users will be detoured onto Lower River Road when the Rio is closed.

The Aspen Village Trail will be closed on Wednesday, March 20 starting at 8 a.m. between Gerbaz Way and the trail underpass beneath Hwy. 82. The Rio Grande Trail will be closed in the area on Thursday and Friday, March 21 and 22, and possibly Saturday, March 23.

Additional work to install a culvert on the Eli Cerise Ditch will take place along the Rio Grande Trail between Gerbaz Way and Lower River Road (between mile markers 30.5 and 31.5 on the Rio Grande Trail) during the weeks of March 25-April 12 to prepare for the bridge. The trail is expected to remain open during this work. Trail users may experience short delays and should use caution when passing through this section.

Tree removal and ditch work is necessary to prepare the site for installation of a pedestrian/bike bridge over the Roaring Fork River. The span, to be known as the Dolores Stutsman Bridge, will link the Aspen Village Trail and Rio Grande Trail. The long-anticipated bridge will provide a connection that is separate from narrow and winding Gerbaz Way. The prefabricated bridge is currently under construction.
