[ARCHIVED] Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners to appoint Interim County Attorney

At a special meeting on Tuesday, July 16, the board will vote on a resolution appointing Richard Neiley, Deputy Pitkin County Attorney, to serve as the interim County Attorney. Neiley, known as “Ry,” has been a dedicated member of the attorneys office for eight years, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of county legal matters to this interim role.

This appointment comes during a challenging time for Pitkin County as the community mourns the loss of County Attorney, John Ely. John served the county for over 34 years, and his passing has left a significant void in the leadership of the attorney's office. His exceptional service and dedication to the community have left a significant mark, and his contributions will be long remembered.

“We are confident Ry will excel in leading the attorney’s office during this interim period,” said Pitkin County Commissioner Greg Poschman. “His extensive experience, close working relationship with John Ely and commitment to the county make him an ideal choice to ensure continuity and stability.”

At the direction of the BOCC, the county human resources team will begin the process for a national search for the permanent position. The board is committed to a thorough process to identify and vet candidates as expeditiously as possible.

“Our leadership team is committed to supporting a smooth transition for Ry and everyone in the attorney’s office during this difficult time,” said Jon Peacock, Pitkin County Manager. “Ry’s appointment as interim County Attorney reflects his long standing service to Pitkin County. We have a strong team in the County Attorney’s Office, and the community can be assured that legal affairs of the county will be in capable hands during this transitional phase.”
