Carlyn is Pitkin County’s Epidemiologist and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. She studied Psychology & Geography for her undergrad at Florida Atlantic University before going on to receive her M.A. in Anthropology from FAU. While writing her thesis in Medical Anthropology and working at the local library, she also completed a Master of Public Health degree from the University of West Florida, with a concentration in Environmental Health. She started her career with the state health department and local governments in South Florida, specializing in mosquito-borne disease during the emergence of Zika virus. She relocated to Colorado to work for the City of Aspen in the Environmental Health and Sustainability department. When the county formed a new health department, she was excited to join the team as a communicable disease specialist, overseeing the epidemiology and emergency preparedness programs. She has been on the team for a number of years and spends much of the summer working in zoonotic disease prevention. She is a lead on the county's emergency response team and has served in wildfire, flood, special event, and pandemic response.
