Concealed Handgun Permit
Effective July 1, 2025, CHP applicants must submit a training certificate from a Verified Instructor approved under HB 1174.
New Requirements for Concealed Handgun Permits
HB 24-1174 Is In Effect As Of July 1, 2025
Beginning July 1st, 2025 - Colorado House Bill 24-1174 requires that any person applying for a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit (including renewals) must present a Certificate of Firearms training obtained by a Verified Concealed Handgun Permit Instructor after demonstrating competence with a handgun.
We accept training certificates earned in other Colorado counties, provided that a verified instructor teaches them and that instructor appears on that county’s website.

New Applications
- Applications received on or after July 1, 2025, are subject to new training requirements - there is no grace period:
- Must have a proof of training certificate from a verified Colorado Instructor dated within one year of the application appointment date.
Renewal Applications
- Renewal applications received on or after July 1, 2025, are subject to new training requirements – there is no grace period.
- Renewals must include a proof of training certificate from a verified Colorado Instructor dated within 6 months of the renewal application receipt date
- Expired permits have a 6-month grace period in which to renew.
- Renewal applications may be submitted no more than 120 days prior to the expiration date.

Our program complies with HB24-1174 and Colorado Revised Statutes 18-12-201 through 18-12-207
Required Items For Your Appointment
Please bring the following to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office
- Your completed Concealed Handgun Permit application. The application will be notarized at that time.
- A copy of the training certificate received for a handgun training course. Copy or certificate must have original signatures.
- Credit Card (preferred), check, or exact cash for $152.50, made payable to "Pitkin County Sheriff's Office" for the processing fees.
- Proof of Pitkin County residency. Example: Colorado Driver's License with current Pitkin County address.
Your fingerprints and photograph will be taken during your appointment at the Sheriff's Office.
Renewals
Your Concealed Handgun Permit is valid for 5 years. Within 120 days of your expiration date you can renew your permit through our office.Please bring the following to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office
- Your completed Concealed Handgun Permit application. The application will be notarized at that time.
- Renewal Affidavit
- Check, exact cash, or credit card for $63.00, made payable to "Pitkin County Sheriff's Office" for the processing fees.
- Proof of Pitkin County residency. Example: Colorado Driver's License with current Pitkin County address.
